Till Schümmer is a computer scientist for the FernUniversitaet (distance university) Hagen in Germany. He has been involved in groupware development since 1994. His current projects include the development of a next generation collaborative learning platform CURE. Patterns are used in this development process to train software developers in groupware development. Till has been co-organizing workshops on groupware patterns at CSCW2002 and ECSCW2003 as well as the XP2003 workshop on distributed software development. He has been shepherd at EuroPLoP 2003.
Jan Borchers is full professor of computer science at RWTH Aachen where he leads the Media Computing Group, having previously worked at ETH Zurich and Stanford. He published the first book on HCI patterns in 2001, hosts the hcipatterns.org community web site, and has been involved in most of the pattern-related workshops and panels at CHI, INTERACT, ChiliPLoP, and elsewhere since 1998. He has taught the concept of HCI patterns at Stanford and other institutions, and written HCI pattern languages to capture his design experience in interactive exhibits and intelligent rooms. He holds a PhD in computer science from Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany.
John Thomas received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1971. After managing a research project in the psychology of aging at Harvard Medical School, he spent 13 years conducting HCI research at IBM Research, and built and directed the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at NYNEX from 1986-1998. John rejoined IBM Research to focus on social and technical aspects of knowledge management. In addition to Patterns, this work has delved into the business use of stories and storytelling and e-learning. John participated in Pattern workshops at INTERACT 99, CHI 2000, and co-chaired a panel on Pattern Languages at CHI 2001. John co-chaired workshops on Patterns at CHI 2003 as well as ’97, CHI ‘03 and CSCW 2002. John has taught at a variety of educational institutions and has over 130 publications and invited presentations in computer science and psychology.
Uwe Zdun is an assistant professor at the Department of Information Systems of the Vienna University of Economics and BA. He received his MS and PhD degrees from the University of Essen (1999, 2001). Uwe's research focuses various software engineering topics, including software patterns, object-orientation, software architecture, and end-user programming. He also worked as a consultant for industry companies. Uwe has been shepherd for numerous PLoP conferences, and he (co-)organized a number of workshops, including EuroPLoP writer's workshops, the EuroPLoP'03 workshop on Component Composition Patterns, and the OOPSLA'03 workshop on Reuse in Constraint Environments.
